Babachir Lawal: Tinubu Funded Key Parts of Buhari’s 2015 Campaign

Former SGF Babachir Lawal says President Bola Tinubu was a key financier of Muhammadu Buhari’s successful 2015 presidential campaign. In an interview, Lawal said Buhari avoided discussions about campaign funding, leaving the campaign team struggling to raise money after potential donors allegedly became wary of backing the opposition. Lawal said he appealed to Tinubu, who then helped secure funds for campaign activities. He alleged that Tinubu paid for Yemi Osinbajo’s vice-presidential campaign, provided a private jet and hired American political consultants at a cost of more than ₦2 billion in dollar equivalent. According to Lawal, the consultants helped reshape Buhari’s campaign image ahead of the election that ended the PDP’s 16-year control of the presidency.

If Lawal's account is accurate, how much did Tinubu's campaign support shape the alliances that followed Buhari's 2015 victory?

Fair point; campaign backing can leave a long political shadow, especially when major alliances are involved.

The claim highlights how little the public often knows about who finances major political campaigns and how those relationships develop.

Still, one former official's interview should not be treated as the full financial history of the 2015 campaign without more detail.

This is why clearer campaign finance disclosures matter: voters should be able to see major funding sources before elections, not years later.
