I Question Why Our Church Celebrates Easter’s Pagan Roots
I write to church leaders in Nigeria to ask why we celebrate Easter’s pagan origins on the day of Christ’s resurrection. The Bible links Jesus’ death to the Passover, not to a spring fertility festival. Historical records show that Easter comes from a goddess called Ēostre or Ishtar. That is where the traditions of bunnies and eggs come from. Equating Christ’s resurrection with a pagan deity feels like mocking our Lord’s sacrifice. Church leaders know the Scriptures well, yet they continue this practice. Jesus warned against those who call him Lord but act in disobedience (Matt 7:22–23). This is a call to repentance and true alignment with God’s Word. Followers should be guided by the Holy Spirit. Light and darkness cannot mix. True celebration must honor Christ alone, not a pagan festival. Repent and reject this blend of paganism and faith.
