A Southern Warning: How the Spread of Sharia Law Threatens One Nigeria

A Southern Warning: How the Spread of Sharia Law Threatens One Nigeria — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Many non-Muslim southerners seem unaware of how quickly Sharia law is taking root across our country under the banner of “One Nigeria.” This justice system allows brutal penalties for simple acts like holding a woman’s hand, drinking beer, or alleged book burning. As Fulani Muslim communities expand in the Southwest, new mosques are appearing in towns and villages. If unchecked, this gradual growth could lead to calls for Sharia enforcement far beyond the North. Non-Muslims face daily fear under Sharia policing. They risk severe punishments even when innocent. To stop this trend, we must demand a referendum or constitutional reset that excludes Sharia from our secular framework. Consider the true cost: a man once had his arm amputated for stealing property worth just ₦13,000, according to a report by a national news outlet. If we stay silent, every southern state could face the same fate.
