Tinubu’s Reform Gap: The Missing Restructuring Agenda

Tinubu’s Reform Gap: The Missing Restructuring Agenda

I recently asked a presidential aide why Nigeria’s restructuring debate has gone silent under President Tinubu. He argued it’s happening through tax reforms, local government autonomy, and regional development commissions, but this “backdoor” approach falls short of the direct constitutional changes once promised. As Lagos governor, Tinubu championed genuine devolution to empower states. Yet more than a year into his presidency, there is still no clear plan to revise revenue sharing, grant state policing powers, or strengthen local autonomy. This absence undermines trust and leaves systemic imbalances in place. Nigerians deserve clarity: Is restructuring still a priority for this administration? If not, what vision will address over-centralisation? It’s time for both government and opposition platforms to sustain this vital conversation and turn bold rhetoric into concrete action.

Honestly, I think these independence steps and new tax rules just might cover part of that restructuring gap.

It seems framing local government autonomy as restructuring sounds more like window dressing than genuine power devolution.

I'm not convinced that proposing commissions is worse than nothing—regional panels can drive real policy shifts if well funded.

The government should publish a clear timeline for autonomy rollout and include stakeholder forums to track restructuring progress.
