Why Should Humanity Suffer Over a Dispute Between God and Satan?
I struggle with the idea that billions of people must suffer because of a dispute between the biblical God and Satan. If a loving father has the power to stop someone harming his children, why would he allow that harm to continue for generations just to prove the rebel wrong? The stories of Adam and Eve, Job, Noah and Sodom raise further questions for me. Humans are punished or suffer the consequences, while Satan is presented as continuing to deceive people. I also question why anyone should inherit sin, suffering and death because of a decision made before they were born, especially when other biblical passages emphasise individual responsibility. The Bible also emerged among older Near Eastern traditions that contained creation and flood narratives. This does not automatically disprove biblical accounts, but it means suffering can be understood through more than one religious explanation. Poverty, disease, injustice, natural disasters, human choices and unequal opportunities all shape people’s lives. For me, belief in a future paradise should not stop anyone from improving life now. We should ask difficult questions, pursue education and skills, plan ahead, support one another and address the real conditions that cause suffering.
