Doctors Warn: Shaving Pubic Hair May Increase Infection Risk
Many people remove pubic hair for hygiene, comfort, or aesthetics. However, medical experts caution that completely removing pubic hair can do more harm than good. Pubic hair acts as a protective barrier. It reduces friction, traps bacteria, and prevents small cuts. Shaving creates microabrasions that allow bacteria, fungi, and viruses to penetrate the skin, raising the risk of folliculitis, molluscum contagiosum, and other infections. Research shows thousands of grooming-related genital injuries each year, most caused by razors. Studies also link hair removal to higher rates of self-reported sexually transmitted infections when the skin barrier is compromised. In hot, humid conditions and under tight clothing, pubic hair provides extra protection against irritation. Repeated shaving can cause ingrown hairs, dark spots, scars, and chronic discomfort.
