Interior Ministry Clarifies Renunciation Fee is ₦2m, Not ₦5m

Interior Ministry Clarifies Renunciation Fee is ₦2m, Not ₦5m — 1 of 3
1 / 3

A Nigerian doctor in the Netherlands sparked online debate claiming the fee to renounce Nigerian nationality jumped from ₦50,000 to ₦5 million around May 2025. He said this cost was required before obtaining Dutch citizenship, as the Netherlands does not allow dual nationality in most cases. Some Nigerians in his comment section said they paid the ₦5 million fee. But the Ministry of Interior’s spokesperson, Mr. Mary Ali, told a national blog that the official charge is actually ₦2 million per person. This clarification aims to correct misinformation and reassure citizens about the true cost of renouncing Nigerian nationality.

With the fee actually set at ₦2 million instead of ₦5 million, do you think this will ease the burden for those renouncing citizenship?

That's a welcome drop—cutting the fee by more than half should lighten wallets and worries a bit.

Now that the fee's halved, do you think more folks will actually go through with renouncing citizenship?

It's interesting that the Ministry had to step in to correct the record after such a wide misinformation spread online.

I no sure say everyone dey follow every change, but calling two million a huge jump maybe too dramatic.

To avoid last-minute surprises, it might help to confirm the current fee through official channels before starting any renunciation process.
