Falconets Prodigy Janet Akekoromowei Nears Benfica Move After Injury Comeback

Janet Akekoromowei is set to join Portuguese champions Benfica on a long-term deal, according to reports. The 18-year-old striker bounced back from a serious knee injury sustained during Nigeria’s U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier against Senegal. The former Bayelsa Queens forward was named NWFL Most Valuable Player in 2025 after a stellar domestic season. She also featured at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia and has since earned her first senior caps for the Super Falcons. Before her injury, Akekoromowei was close to signing with Barcelona Femení. Now fully fit, she is poised to take the next step with one of Europe’s leading women’s clubs.

She should focus on gradual minutes with Benfica's reserves or loan spells to build strength before challenging for regular first team action.
