I’m Drowning in Debt to Keep My Family Afloat as the First Daughter
I grew up believing that, as the first daughter, I had to look after my siblings. That belief followed me into marriage, motherhood and work. During my NYSC year, I used my allowance, my husband’s support and loans from friends to feed my family and pay for my brother’s rehabilitation. Later, I borrowed heavily to return two siblings to school after my father withdrew his financial support. I now have a civil service job, but my salary is already tied to school fees and a ₦200,000 debt. My siblings expect me to keep helping, while I struggle to buy things for myself. I want to earn enough to support my family without losing my peace of mind.
