Historic Washington Talks: Israel and Lebanon Open Direct Dialogue After 40 Years

Senior Israeli and Lebanese envoys met at the U.S. State Department on Tuesday. This marks the first direct public meeting between their governments in over four decades. Mediated by the U.S., Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter and Lebanese Ambassador Nada Hamadeh Moawad launched talks aimed at ending the recent regional war. Israel, under PM Netanyahu’s mandate, demands disarmament of Hezbollah and a comprehensive peace treaty, while Lebanon insists on an immediate ceasefire. This push follows the collapse of last year’s U.S.-brokered truce and reflects Washington’s strategic objectives.

I'm not convinced this one meeting alone will shift decades of mistrust without a clear roadmap for follow-up steps.

To build on this dialogue, both envoys should establish joint working groups addressing border security and trade integration as immediate priorities.
