Osun Assembly Considers Bill to Extend UNIOSUN Vice-Chancellor’s Tenure by Two Years

The Osun State House of Assembly has begun considering an amendment to the law establishing Osun State University, UNIOSUN. The proposed change would allow a two-year extension of the Vice-Chancellor’s tenure. Governor Ademola Adeleke requested the amendment in a letter dated July 27, 2026. The bill passed second reading after lawmakers argued that Professor Odunayo Olabooye’s continued leadership could support stability, staff welfare and academic progress at the university. The proposal has also raised concerns about whether the existing law permits such an extension. The amendment includes provisions on grants and scholarships for UNIOSUN students. I had warned about this repeatedly, but my concerns were ignored. I believe the Assembly should carefully examine the legal basis and public-interest implications of the proposed extension.
