Why You Should Not Give Water to an Accident Victim
A Nigerian nurse has advised bystanders not to give water, food or any drink to a person injured in a road accident until medical professionals assess them. She explained that a victim may be in shock or have a head injury that affects swallowing. Giving water in that condition could cause choking or allow liquid to enter the lungs. The victim may also need urgent surgery and anaesthesia, or may have internal injuries that are not immediately visible. Instead, call for emergency help, keep the person’s airway clear and avoid giving them anything to eat or drink while waiting for trained responders.
