Reps Freeze NRS Recruitment, Vow Legal Action Over Chairman’s Absence

The House Committee on Federal Character has ordered an immediate halt to all Nigeria Revenue Service recruitment exercises. It warned it will use constitutional powers to compel NRS Executive Chairman Zacch Adedeji to appear before lawmakers. Committee chair Ahmed Idris Wase cited repeated failures by Adedeji and Federal Character Commission boss Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran to honour invitations. He said Sections 88 and 89 of the Constitution back the National Assembly’s right to summon officials and demand documents. Lawmakers linked the standoff to waivers granted by the FCC for NRS recruitment, despite a prior House directive to stop approvals. The panel insisted that no agency is above constitutional oversight and that continued defiance weakens democracy. Meanwhile, sources suggest Adedeji’s silence may stem from allegations of irregular appointments at the NRS. A recent suit in an Abuja High Court is challenging several executive director appointments pending a final judgment.
