Stopping Preventable Postpartum Bleeding: Life-Saving Medicines for Nigerian Women
Postpartum hemorrhage remains the leading cause of maternal deaths worldwide. Women can bleed to death within minutes if the right treatment is not given quickly. The World Health Organization recommends uterotonic medicines after delivery to help the uterus contract. Oxytocin is highly effective but requires cold storage that many rural clinics cannot guarantee. Misoprostol is heat-stable and easier to store, yet frequent shortages and weak distribution keep it out of reach for many communities. Tranexamic acid can also cut deaths from severe bleeding when given early. Still, it is often missing from primary health centres. Poor supply chains, stock-outs and storage challenges must be tackled so that every woman, wherever she lives, can access these essential, life-saving drugs.
