My Wife Refuses to Help with Core Household Bills – Am I Wrong?

I’m a married man with two children. My wife and I both work full-time and earn good salaries. When we got married, I covered rent, school fees, utilities, food, transport, and all major family needs. We managed well back then. With soaring prices, I now struggle financially and my mental health is suffering. I asked my wife to contribute more to household bills. She refused, insisting that a man must provide. She buys things for herself and the children but won’t cover core expenses. We also hire and pay a maid for cleaning. I’m not asking her to replace me—I simply want a true partnership. Am I being unreasonable?

Have you discussed splitting those bills with your wife to see if there's a fairer arrangement now that costs have risen?

If you two both earn well, her refusal to contribute feels one-sided and might create resentment down the road.

Sounds like you never set clear rules for household finances; can't blame her for thinking this was your sole responsibility.

Draft a simple budget together, listing each expense category and agreeing who pays what. Then revisit monthly.
