Peter Obi Urges Nigeria to Adopt South Africa’s Transparent Borrowing Model

Peter Obi challenged Nigeria to emulate South Africa’s accountable borrowing practices. He praised South Africa’s clear purpose for each loan and measurable benefits to citizens. He warned that Nigeria’s public debt has soared from about ₦87 trillion in 2023 to nearly ₦200 trillion without transparent deployment. He argued every naira borrowed should link to visible projects that improve living standards, create jobs, and boost productivity. Obi stressed that good governance demands full disclosure of how loans are used. He urged the government to ensure every borrowing decision answers: “How does this improve the life of the ordinary Nigerian?”
