Russian Chess Official Dies After Suspected Malaria Infection During Abuja Trip

Sergei Indeikin, a 36-year-old operations manager and delegate of the International Chess Federation, has died after reportedly contracting severe malaria during a work trip to Abuja. Indeikin attended the FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, held in Abuja from August 1 to 8. He later travelled through Uzbekistan and Moscow before returning to Perm, Russia, where he became seriously ill and was hospitalised. His family and several Russian media outlets said he likely contracted malaria in Nigeria. However, FIDE has only confirmed that he died after a sudden illness and has not publicly confirmed malaria as the medical cause. Indeikin had worked on major international chess events since 2021. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
