‘We Are Here to Listen’: WHO Director Calls for Community-led Fight Against Bundibugyo Ebola
At a media briefing in Bunia, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, urged local communities in Ituri to take ownership in ending the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak. He emphasized that WHO’s role is to listen and support solutions developed under DRC government leadership. Noting this is DRC’s 17th Ebola epidemic, Ghebreyesus explained that no licensed vaccine or treatment exists for the Bundibugyo strain. He highlighted recent recoveries among patients in Ituri and advised anyone with symptoms to seek medical care early to improve survival chances. Over two days, he will meet women’s groups, religious and business leaders and youth to build trust and strengthen engagement. He also called on countries to lift travel bans that hinder response efforts and pledged that WHO and its partners will sustain essential health services, safe burials and accurate information sharing during and after the outbreak.
