Group Highlights HIV, TB and Malaria Service Gaps in Edo Communities
The Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria has asked journalists in Edo State to help spotlight gaps in HIV, tuberculosis and malaria services through community-led monitoring. At a media roundtable in Benin City, the group said the monitoring programme enables patients and affected communities to assess medicine availability, quality of care, stigma, health workers’ conduct and barriers to treatment. Findings are shared with health authorities to support action and improve accountability. Participants reported that residents of Jattu, Iyakpi and Uromi travel long distances for ART and TB services. They also cited commodity shortages in facilities across Etsako West, Oluku and Ubiaja, poor infrastructure at Stella Obasanjo Hospital and General Hospital, Ekpoma, and shortages of health workers in Esan South-East and Esan West. The group urged Edo health authorities and local government chairmen to address the gaps, noting that advocacy visits had already been made to facilities and relevant stakeholders.
