Israeli Medical Team Helps Zambia Train Pediatric Heart Surgeons

An Israeli pediatric cardiac team has helped train Zambia’s next generation of heart surgeons while supporting life-saving operations at Lusaka’s National Heart Hospital. During a week-long mission, the team supervised 10 children’s open-heart surgeries, including that of nine-year-old Richard Mbimbi, who had severe rheumatic heart disease. The programme also donated a heart-lung machine valued at $200,000, only the second of its kind in Zambia. The partnership focuses on building local capacity through a six-year fellowship programme. Zambia’s first pediatric cardiac surgeon completed the training in 2024, while a second trainee is expected to return home next year. The organisation says it has treated nearly 8,500 children and trained more than 160 medical professionals worldwide. I believe more countries should invest in practical humanitarian partnerships that equip local doctors and give children access to specialist care.
