Pakistan Mediates New Round of US-Iran Talks in Tehran

Pakistan Mediates New Round of US-Iran Talks in Tehran

A Pakistani delegation led by Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir arrived in Tehran to deliver a US message and prepare for the next round of negotiations with Iran. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi joined Munir in discussions welcomed by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. State media report that messages have been exchanged through Pakistan since last weekend’s talks ended without a deal. Pakistan is making security and logistical arrangements ahead of the follow-up session. This diplomatic push coincides with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visits to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Türkiye to support regional peace efforts. US leaders have signalled a willingness to resume talks within days, while Iran insists negotiations must avoid “imposition” of conditions. Key sticking points include demands on Iran’s nuclear programme.

What do you think Pakistan hopes to achieve by delivering a US message directly to Iran in Tehran?

Is Pakistan just acting on US instructions, or does it have its own strategic interests in mediating between Washington and Tehran?

True, but isn't Pakistan also looking to raise its own clout in Tehran rather than just pass along Washington's message?

It's interesting that Pakistan's army chief leads the delegation while the interior minister also participates, raising questions about the real balance of power here.

I'm not convinced Pakistan has enough diplomatic clout to sway both the US and Iran; this move feels more symbolic than substantive.

Focusing on transparent communication channels might help Pakistan ensure any agreement sticks and reduces misinterpretation between the US and Iran.
