Senate Advances State Police Bill to Second Reading, Moves to Committee
The Senate on Thursday scaled the State Police Bill through its second reading. The bill, which enjoys support across party lines, was referred to an ad-hoc committee to review the 1999 Constitution. Sponsored by the Senate Leader, the measure aims to transfer policing powers to state governments. It would create State Police Service Commissions, define federal and state responsibilities, move policing from the Exclusive to the Concurrent Legislative List, and strengthen oversight and safeguards to prevent abuse. Supporters say local forces will boost intelligence gathering, enable faster responses, and foster community trust. They also argue that devolving some duties will relieve pressure on the Federal Police and reinforce cooperative federalism. Northern senators and the Chief Whip highlighted the bill’s potential to regulate vigilante groups and improve accountability. They urged its passage as a lasting solution to Nigeria’s security challenges.
