Anglican Diocese of Okene Sets Two-Week Minimum Before Members Can Hold Burials

The Anglican Diocese of Okene in Kogi State has directed members to allow at least two weeks between a relative’s death and burial. The resolution was adopted at the Diocese’s 2026 Synod and applies across its parishes. The Diocese said the period will give families enough time to prepare befitting burial arrangements. It added that embalming a body during that period carries no spiritual or evil consequence, even where the deceased had requested a quicker burial. The Synod also barred externally sourced undertakers from burial programmes, directing parishes to use the Boys Brigade instead. Other resolutions include encouraging diaspora members to send at least half of their annual tithe to their home churches, promoting investment and soft-loan opportunities, and holding Youth Sunday every third Sunday of the month. Children who complete JSS 3 will also formally move from Sunday School to the adult church each year on 27 May. The Diocese further called for stronger discipleship and more intentional evangelism to grow membership.
