The Wedding Invoice: Exposing Nigeria’s Patriarchal Parenting Myth
Children instinctively know the difference between a biological Father and an earned Dad. One holds a legal title. The other builds trust through daily presence. At many Nigerian weddings, families present an “invoice” for years of training and correction. Yet cultural norms show daughters were taught silence and endurance while sons learned to enforce compliance. Research links harsh, authoritarian parenting to higher aggression in men and greater vulnerability for women. It also highlights how unequal family support drives transactional sex and deep psychological distress. Nigeria’s own laws guarantee adult couples the right to marry without family consent and prohibit domestic violence. Yet these statutes are often ignored in favor of blood-based authority and traditional ceremonies.
