Oga Duke: Why I Rejected a ₦30m Gambling Deal Despite Building a Million-Follower Platform
A viral video featuring my Miniature Schnauzer, Duke, changed my life and pushed me into content creation. I started with an iPhone, a tripod and free editing tools, then earned my first $300 from YouTube after one video took off. Before content creation, I ran a leather-bag business that helped me earn my first million as a teenager. The business struggled during the COVID-19 lockdown, and I later found a new path by sharing funny and relatable moments from life with Duke. As my audience grew, I learnt to protect my work through proper usage-rights agreements and to reject deals that did not fit my values. One international gambling company offered me about ₦30 million monthly for two videos, but I declined because I make family-friendly content. My advice to upcoming creators is to start with what they have, focus on a clear niche, protect their reputation and prioritise quality over chasing every opportunity.
