Dr Maureen Umeakuewulu Named CMD of COOUTH, Unveils Plan to Modernise Services
Dr Maureen Umeakuewulu, a senior obstetrician and gynaecologist at National Hospital Abuja, has assumed office as the new Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Awka. She succeeds Dr Joe Akabuike. In her first media address, she praised the state governor’s new trauma centre and pledged to have it fully operational soon. She also appealed for the establishment of a cancer centre in Anambra to prevent patients from seeking care outside the state. Umeakuewulu outlined three core priorities: boosting service delivery, training and retraining staff, and strengthening research. Her plans include computerising hospital processes, reviving dormant units, expanding orthopaedics and radiology services, and securing accreditation for residency programmes. She will partner with local and international hospitals to exchange expertise, enhance telemedicine services, and launch an endowment fund to attract support from Anambra philanthropists. She also intends to strengthen satellite clinics and referral networks to reduce maternal mortality in the region.
