How I Spent Millions to ‘Japa’ Only to Be Deported in 24 Hours
In 2019, I was convinced that leaving Nigeria would fix everything. I earned just ₦65,000 a month as an admin officer in Lagos and lived in a cramped one-room apartment. Saving for my future felt impossible. I emptied my savings, sold my share of family land and borrowed from anyone who would lend. I raised over ₦8 million for a six-month visa, flights and accommodation. I believed this was my ticket to a better life. Less than 24 hours after landing, immigration officers put me on the next flight home. The humiliation and shock of that moment still haunt me seven years later. This is my story of obsession, sacrifice and the deep emotional scars left by a failed ‘Japa’ dream.
