Anambra Councils Clash Over Renaming Limca Road After Chief Anyaoku

Anambra Councils Clash Over Renaming Limca Road After Chief Anyaoku — 1 of 2
1 / 2

A dispute has erupted between Idemili North and Onitsha North Local Government Areas over the renaming of popular Limca Road. Idemili North held a brief ceremony at Nkpor Junction to honour former Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku. The Idemili North chairman said the change celebrates Anyaoku’s integrity and service. He urged young people to embrace discipline and hard work in public life. Onitsha North LGA has challenged the action as illegal and unconstitutional. In an official notice, the Mayor stressed that Limca Road lies entirely within Onitsha North’s territorial jurisdiction under the 1999 Constitution. The council warned ministries, map publishers and the public to disregard the new name until proper legislative procedures are followed. It affirmed that Limca Road remains the official designation unless officially changed by Onitsha North authorities.

I hear your worries, but this name change spat might stay a minor tussle, not shake broader politics.

It's telling that Idemili North staged a ceremony before even reaching consensus with Onitsha North over the same road.

I'm not convinced renaming this one road will honour Chief Anyaoku as much as broader community projects would.

Perhaps both councils should form a joint committee to agree on a road name reflecting shared heritage and avoid future clashes.
