How a ₦12,000 Loan Helped Me Build a Writing Career Earning Up to ₦1 Million Monthly
At 19, I was a final-year nursing student struggling to make ends meet after my grandfather’s illness strained my family’s finances. With just ₦5,000 from home most weeks, I borrowed ₦12,000 from a friend to take a creative writing course. I balanced nursing school, clinical postings and writing lessons, often sleeping only a few hours. After graduation, nursing roles offering about ₦50,000 monthly pushed me to focus on writing instead. A remote role, small freelance jobs and consistently sharing my work online helped me build experience and a portfolio. My breakthrough came when a client commissioned me to ghostwrite a 200-page book for ₦500,000. Another book project later paid more than ₦1 million. I now work with several clients and earn roughly $600 to $800 monthly, while supporting my parents and helping my brother through school. I want to keep growing my income and teach more Nigerians practical writing skills. For me, that ₦12,000 loan became the first step towards financial independence.
