NYSC Member Explains Why She Wore a Skirt Throughout Her Service Year
A former corps member has explained why she wore a skirt during her NYSC service in Adamawa State. She said her religious conviction is that women should not wear trousers, so she sought permission from camp officials to alter her uniform. She said the state coordinator offered her the choice of remaining in camp without taking part in activities or leaving temporarily and returning for her posting letter. She chose to alter the trousers into a skirt, wrote to the NYSC Director-General, and later continued her service in the modified uniform. According to her account, she faced ridicule and discouragement from some people in camp and during her service year. However, she said support and prayers from her pastor and church members helped her remain firm in her decision.
