Has Nigeria Made Us Too Suspicious of Genuine Kindness?
Many of us have learned to be cautious after painful experiences. You help someone financially and later feel disrespected. You recommend someone for an opportunity, only for them to compete against you. You forgive, yet the same behaviour continues. After enough disappointments, it is easy to say, “Na Nigeria we dey” or assume that everybody is selfish. But should another person’s bad behaviour determine the kind of person I become? Kindness is not stupidity, and forgiveness does not mean having no boundaries. I can be generous while using wisdom. I can love people without trusting everybody or allowing manipulation. The real challenge is not to let betrayal turn my heart bitter. I should love when possible, forgive when necessary, set boundaries when appropriate, and use wisdom always. Kindness with discernment is strength, not weakness. Has Nigerian society made us too suspicious of genuine kindness?
