The ₦100,000 Silence on Third Mainland Bridge
The yellow Danfo bus groaned onto Third Mainland Bridge at 8:30 PM. Rain dripped through the roof as tired commuters sat in damp clothes. I leaned my head against the window, longing for my bed in mainland Lagos. Next to me, a sharply dressed man stared at his phone. His banking app balance had so many commas it made my head spin. Why was a millionaire on a ₦400 ride? Suddenly the bus clanked to a halt and the lights went out. Passengers spilled into the drizzle. The man in the suit whispered into his phone, “It’s done. They think I’m still at the office.” Moments later, a sleek black SUV pulled up. Two men in dark clothing stepped out. Instead of a struggle, the suited man handed over a heavy envelope, climbed into the SUV, and tossed me a thick stack of ₦1,000 notes. “For your silence, bro,” he said before speeding away. I slipped the cash into my pocket and climbed back on board. For once, Lagos traffic didn’t bother me.
