How Commissioner Orutugu Transformed Security in Anambra
When Ikioye Orutugu took over as Anambra’s Commissioner of Police in February 2025, many communities had become no-go zones. Criminals felt emboldened and officers hesitated to wear their uniforms. He wasted no time warning offenders to relocate or face the law. Orutugu combined firm enforcement with institutional reforms. He retrained over 100 police officers at the Oji River College and upgraded the Agunechemba vigilante group into a disciplined auxiliary force. More than 300 promotions rewarded merit and lifted morale across the command. The results are clear. Awka and other troubled areas now enjoy greater calm. Reports of police misconduct and extortion have declined. This turnaround shows that strong leadership and professional standards can restore public trust in Nigerian policing.
