Nigeria’s First Homegrown Malaria Test Kits: A Game Changer for Healthcare
Malaria remains a leading public health challenge in Nigeria. Treating every fever as malaria without proper testing wastes household income and risks accelerating drug-resistant parasites. NASENI’s partnership with Troment Nigeria to produce N-CheckUP rapid diagnostic kits locally represents a landmark shift. The Abuja-based facility can manufacture up to 600 million test kits annually. Local production will cut import dependency, conserve foreign exchange, and make diagnostics more affordable. Encouraging Nigerians to test before treatment will improve accuracy and health outcomes. Domestic manufacturing also strengthens our healthcare security by reducing reliance on global supply chains. It creates skilled jobs for engineers, scientists, technicians, and logistics professionals while advancing local technological capacity. Under AfCFTA, Nigeria could even become a regional supplier of medical diagnostics. This initiative demonstrates that effective healthcare relies on both accurate diagnosis and sustainable local industry. Homegrown test kits promise long-term economic and health benefits for the nation.
