When Poor Parenting Begins to Undermine Children’s Education
The home is a child’s first school, and parents are the first teachers. When children lack guidance, care and academic support at home, the effects quickly show in school through poor attendance, weak performance, indiscipline and dropout. As a teacher and coach, I find it painful to see children arrive in class exhausted, hungry or unable to concentrate because they have spent their time hawking, doing menial work or carrying heavy domestic responsibilities. Teachers can guide and inspire pupils, but they cannot fully replace parents or guardians. Parents should not bear all the blame. Poverty, unemployment and family instability make parenting difficult for many households. Schools, communities and government agencies must work together to identify vulnerable children, support struggling families, promote parenting education and keep every child in school. A child neglected at home eventually affects the classroom, the community and society. Rebuilding a strong partnership between parents and schools is essential for raising responsible and productive citizens.
