Nigeria’s Adire Fabric Poised to Become a $1 Billion Global Industry
At a stakeholders’ meeting in Abeokuta, financial expert Dr. Tunde Bajela urged the Federal Government to boost funding for Nigeria’s traditional Adire sector. He warned that while the global textile market tops $1.2 trillion, Nigeria accounts for less than 0.01 percent. With proper investment, Adire could grow into a $1 billion export business, create jobs and diversify the non-oil economy. Bajela highlighted that Nigeria’s domestic textile market may expand from $9 billion in 2025 to over $16 billion by 2034. He cautioned that foreign-made imitations threaten local artisans but stressed that handcrafted Adire carries premium value thanks to its cultural authenticity. Ogun State officials announced measures to protect genuine producers, including discouraging cheap imports and promoting Adire in public uniforms. Organisers from the Innovation Center for Leadership and Entrepreneurship Development and partners also plan an Adire Hub with a museum, archives and training spaces to preserve the craft and support new entrepreneurs.
