DR Congo Reports 1,521 Deaths as Ebola Outbreak Reaches 3,442 Cases

The Democratic Republic of Congo says 1,521 people have died in its latest Ebola outbreak, while laboratory-confirmed infections have risen to 3,442. Officials put the fatality rate at 44%, although health experts fear the true number of infections may be higher because some cases have not been detected or reported. They believe the virus may have circulated for months before the outbreak was identified in mid-May. The World Food Programme has described it as the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record. Ebola spreads through direct physical contact, especially contact with an infected person's bodily fluids.
