WAEC: Fatal Gombe-Yola Crash Caused WASSCE Delays
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says a deadly accident on the Gombe-Yola highway on June 3, which killed three officials transporting sensitive question papers, was the main cause of delays in some WASSCE exams. The council added that security threats and logistical bottlenecks also hindered the timely distribution of exam materials, forcing candidates in parts of Oyo, Lagos and Osun states to sit papers late into the night using torchlights and solar lamps. Preliminary checks showed that late candidate registration and unfinished exam arrangements made matters worse. WAEC says its teams worked around the clock to deploy emergency measures, and the smooth conduct of exams from June 5 indicates that most challenges have been resolved. The council assures the public that all remaining papers will proceed without further disruption.
