Infantino’s Senior Adviser Resigns Over Plan to Sell Stake in FIFA Commercial Assets
Carlos Cordeiro, a senior adviser to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, has resigned over plans to create FIFA Forward Enterprise, a commercial subsidiary that would manage assets such as World Cup broadcasting rights, sponsorships, licensing and ticketing. The proposal would allow FIFA to sell a minority stake in the subsidiary to private investors, reportedly raising about $4.2 billion. Cordeiro said he opposed the plan because FIFA already has billions of dollars in reserves and no debt. He described the proposal as a long-term risk to football, arguing that it would effectively mortgage the future value of the World Cup. UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation have also voiced opposition, with UEFA members reportedly considering a boycott of FIFA competitions if the plan is approved.
