South-West NCCSALW Shifts Focus to Community Mop-Up of Illicit Small Arms
The South-West zonal office of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons has warned that over five million illegal firearms fuel insecurity, banditry and terrorism in Nigeria. Zonal Director CP Abiodun Mustapha Alamutu explained that while border interceptions have improved, the Centre will now target weapons already circulating in communities. He urged traditional rulers, NGOs and community leaders to support voluntary surrender and even consider conditional amnesty for those who hand in their arms. Dr. Kunle Olawunmi from Chrisland University proposed reusing or selling recovered weapons under strict regulation instead of burning them. Ogun State’s Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, also called for additional strategies to rapidly mop up illegal arms nationwide.
