Ogun Plans Produce Reserves to Support Cocoa Farmers and Curb Forest Encroachment
The Ogun State Government says it plans to establish Scheduled Agricultural Produce Reserves across its three senatorial districts. The reserves are intended to provide cocoa and other cash-crop farmers with legitimate, lower-risk land while reducing farming activities in forest areas. At a cocoa pre-season stakeholders’ forum in Abeokuta, the state said it had distributed high-yielding, disease-resistant cocoa seedlings, subsidised fertilisers, agro-chemicals and mechanisation support across its 20 local government areas. It also announced plans to provide more motorcycles for field inspections and anti-smuggling operations. Officials urged farmers to improve traceability, grading and zero-deforestation practices to meet international market standards. The Department of Produce Services also requested more staff, vehicles and motorcycles to strengthen monitoring ahead of the 2026 cocoa season.
