Retired Officers Back National Veterans Federation to Strengthen Welfare
A coalition of retired military personnel has voiced support for the proposed Veterans Federation of Nigeria (VFN). They say the federation will bring together diverse veterans’ associations and improve welfare for former service members across the country. The initiative began in 2018 under former Chief of Defence Staff General Abayomi Olonisakin. Military veterans met with experts from the US, Egypt and Tunisia to develop a framework guided by global best practices. Committees were then set up to draft the legal structure and coordinate implementation. The coalition alleges that the current leadership of the Nigerian Legion is now opposing the plan, despite earlier participation in its development. Supporters argue the VFN will provide a unified platform for healthcare, housing, education, transportation, skills acquisition and other welfare services. They believe it will also strengthen engagement with government institutions on veterans’ issues.
