My Situationship Drained Nearly All My Savings
A university student in Lagos shares how an exclusive situationship became financially exhausting. What began as a casual arrangement gradually turned into a pattern of paying for hotel visits, food, cigarettes and repeated requests for money. Despite having an ₦80,000 allowance and savings of about ₦150,000, she says she spent an estimated ₦120,000 to ₦150,000 on the relationship. Her partner often promised to repay her but rarely did, leaving her short of money and dependent on extra support from her mother. She eventually tried to set boundaries, recovered part of what she was owed and stopped treating the relationship as exclusive. The experience made her reconsider the cost of ignoring financial red flags in a relationship.
