FG Confirms New Abeokuta 480MW Substation On Track for December 2026

FG Confirms New Abeokuta 480MW Substation On Track for December 2026

The Federal Government says the new Abeokuta 330/132 kV transmission substation in Obafemi Owode LGA, Ogun State, remains on schedule for delivery and commissioning by December 2026. The project is part of Phase 1, Batch 1 of the Presidential Power Initiative, a partnership between the Federal Government and Siemens Energy. It covers five key substations nationwide—Abeokuta, Ayede-Ibadan, Offa, Onitsha and Sokoto—with a combined capacity of 986 MW. The Abeokuta station alone will inject 480 MW into the national grid and upgrade transmission voltage from 132 kV to 330 kV. Civil works at the Abeokuta site are set for completion between June and July 2026, after which electrical installations will run from August to November. Managing Director of FGN Power Company says all remains on course for commissioning in December. The Siemens Energy Project Director also expressed confidence in meeting the timeline. Once operational, the new facility will boost electricity supply across Ogun State and the South-West, support the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, and stimulate socio-economic growth. This deliverable under the Renewed Hope Agenda underscores the administration’s commitment to stable, reliable power for Nigerians.

How might this new 480MW substation change power reliability for businesses and homes around Abeokuta by the end of 2026?

Good point. This new substation on track should really improve supply consistency and cut down on sudden outages.

I get your optimism, but the substations' completion doesn't guarantee better supply. Distribution network and maintenance still matter.

The project timeline seems ambitious, given previous delays on similar transmission substations across other states.

I'm not convinced December 2026 is realistic without clearer updates on funding and construction progress from the FG.

Local businesses should start planning backup generators or alternative power solutions to bridge any gaps before the substation goes live.
