NAWOJ Lagos Commemorates Kudirat Abiola as Iconic Woman 30 Years After Her Death

The Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists has honoured the late Chief Kudirat Olayinka Abiola as its Iconic Woman, marking three decades since her assassination on June 4, 1996. NAWOJ Chairperson Jumoke Johnson praised Kudirat’s courage, sacrifice and pivotal role in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle. She highlighted how Kudirat emerged as a strategist and unyielding voice for justice during a turbulent political period. Chapter Secretary Anu M. Thomas recalled Kudirat’s mobilisation of women, civil society and international allies after the annulment of the June 12 election. NAWOJ urged all levels of government and media organisations to preserve her legacy by protecting women human rights defenders and women journalists.
