I Stayed in My Marriage After Abuse and Infidelity. Here’s What I Learnt
I grew up believing marriage would look like my parents’ warm and loving relationship. But only months after my wedding, I began to realise that love, calm personalities and good intentions do not prevent serious conflict. Having children changed my health, finances and relationship. Pregnancy affected my memory, and postpartum depression left me struggling to cope. After resigning from my job, I became financially vulnerable and the pressure in my marriage grew. One argument after our second child led to physical violence that left me injured and needing hospital treatment. Years later, I also discovered infidelity. Choosing to remain in the marriage did not mean ignoring what happened or losing myself. I have rebuilt my independence, set clearer boundaries and learnt to communicate more deliberately. My biggest lesson is that love alone cannot sustain a marriage. Respect, safety, honesty, finances, intimacy and intentional communication matter too.
