Insecurity Can Never End If Nigeria Forgives Terrorists – Deji Adeyanju on Ex-Boko Haram Amnesties

Insecurity Can Never End If Nigeria Forgives Terrorists – Deji Adeyanju on Ex-Boko Haram Amnesties

A recent ceremony in Borno State saw over 3,000 former Boko Haram members donning white T-shirts and black trousers to pledge on the Quran that they would renounce violence forever. State officials, including the Information Commissioner and the Governor’s Special Adviser on Security, emphasized that the oath is binding and urged communities to welcome the repentant fighters for successful reintegration. Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju criticized the amnesty program on social media, arguing it undermines Nigeria’s fight against insecurity. “The only repentant terrorist is a dead one,” he warned, saying forgiveness will never bring lasting peace.

More than 3,000 ex-fighters pledging on the Quran sounds symbolic, but past efforts haven't always led to lasting security improvements.
