Understanding Eating Disorders: Anorexia, Bulimia and Nutrition Support
Eating disorders can affect appetite, nutrition and overall health. Depression, anxiety, allergies, hormonal conditions and some illnesses may also disrupt normal eating patterns. Anorexia nervosa involves severely restricting food because of fear of weight gain. It can lead to malnutrition and dangerously low body weight. Bulimia involves repeated binge eating followed by attempts to compensate, such as self-induced vomiting, excessive exercise or laxative use. Persistent difficulty with eating or drinking may require medical assessment. In some recovery situations, such as after surgery, doctors may use tube feeding or intravenous nutrition to support the patient.
