Nigeria Unveils Groundbreaking Clean Hydrogen Plan to Boost Industry
Nigeria has launched a landmark clean hydrogen initiative to accelerate industrial transformation and support its net-zero emissions target. Unveiled at the inaugural meeting of the Project Steering Committee under the Global Clean Hydrogen Programme in Abuja, the plan sets a roadmap for green hydrogen to drive future electricity generation and renewable energy growth. The Energy Commission of Nigeria says hydrogen will help decarbonise manufacturing, steel and chemical production while attracting investment and creating high-skilled jobs. The initiative also aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to diversify energy sources and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Funded by the Global Environment Facility and implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the five-year programme aims to strengthen institutional capacity, develop policy frameworks and launch pilot projects. It is expected to benefit over a thousand Nigerians, especially women and youth, and position the country for a leading role in Africa’s green hydrogen economy.
