Yemi Solade Insists Yoruba Filmmakers Preceded Nollywood, Says He Started Before Pete Edochie

Actor Yemi Solade has restated his claim that Yoruba filmmakers were making films before the modern Nollywood industry emerged. He said he respects Pete Edochie as an elder and would greet him accordingly, but maintains that he entered the acting profession earlier. Speaking in an interview, Solade said Yoruba actors and filmmakers had a long-established industry before Nollywood became widely recognised. He named veterans including Peju Ogunmola, Muka Ray and Jide Kosoko while arguing that Yoruba contributions to Nigerian cinema are often overlooked. His comments have reopened debate over the history of Nigerian filmmaking and the contributions of different regional film industries to Nollywood.
